Dracula Has Left the Building

A Hollywood Hills home once owned by actor Bela Lugosi, who portrayed Count Dracula onstage and on-screen, is listed at $4.197 million.

I love Bela Lugosi. My relationship with him began in my childhood, when he scared the begeezus out of me in Universal’s seminal “Dracula.” I’ve been a devotee ever since, following his career through all its highs and lows. A truly fine actor handicapped by his inability to lose his thick Hungarian accent (which would become the trademark Dracula accent for all time) Lugosi never received in life the accolades which he deserved. For a little while he did, maybe, when his name was still synonymous with the king of the vampires; alas, it didn’t last.

This castle was a home fit for such a man, one worthy of his greatness. It was not the home in which he died. By the time of his departure from the flesh, Lugosi’s finances had dwindled, as had his marketability in the movie industry. He left this world a decidedly simpler, humbler man. But this estate did belong to him, once. Perhaps he was at his happiest there. And the place is now on sale. So—anybody wanna buy me a birthday present, or Christmas present? How about one gift to cover every birthday and Christmas I will ever have? Any takers? Pretty please?
