Ed Wood’s “Quality Studio” Getting Facelifted
If I had my druthers, and if things were as they SHOULD be, the small sound studio at 5628 1/2 Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles, where Ed Wood filmed the legendary and infamous PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, would be restored to the exact condition it was in circa 1959 and designated as an historic landmark and museum. As it is, at least the building isn’t going the same route as far too many historic structures, i.e. being torn down. It is being completely renovated and will become a recording studio. This is the second-best scenario. I recall the joy I felt when able to report that Quality Studio would be preserved. That sense of elation continues.
These photographs are exclusives, provided by Wood historian and my online buddy Bob Blackburn. They may or may not have been taken covertly, and show the “in the process” stage of the restoration. Cool, huh? I just hope whoever the new proprietors are, they appreciate the importance of the building they will be occupying. This is sacred ground, people.
Unlike most folks, I have no desire to visit Los Angeles. I don’t care to see the “homes of the stars.” Since Universal Studios tore down the PHANTOM OF THE OPERA set, there are now only TWO locations I want to see there. Ed’s studio site and the La Brea Tar Pits. If you count Tarzana, former home of Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs, which is a suburb, then there are three. Only three. But the site of Quality Studios is number one.
