Eddie Izzard Lands Vampire Role in The Munsters Remake

I’ll admit, I wasn’t thrilled when I heard the news that The Munsters was being remade into a new show. Titled Mockingbird Lane in reference to the fictional family’s address in the original series at 1313 Mockingbird Lane, the new show doesn’t have me all excited, mainly because I was never a fan of the original. Gasp! Yeah, I am not a Munsters fan. However, it was recently announced that the brilliant Eddie Izzard had been cast in the role of Grandpa Munster, and that, has me a bit more interested.

Mockingbird Lane has cast comedian Eddie Izzard as the lead role of Grandpa Munster, “the Munster family patriarch, a powerful, ancient vampire with an irrepressible twinkle in his eye. He can shapeshift into rats, wolves, and other creatures at will, but he’s also dapper and charming in a fedora; he is a Don Juan-type womanizer with penchant for flashy, sexy outfits.”

I absolutely and totally adore Eddie Izzard, he is hands down one of my favorite comics. But, according to reports, Mockingbird Lane is going to be a drama, not a silly family comedy. Now, Eddie has been doing a lot of drama lately and he is a fantastic actor, but honestly, I would much rather see him in a comedic version of The Munsters, not an uber serious drama.

X-Men director Bryan Singer is to helm the NBC project, and Pushing Daisies creator Bryan Fuller is set to write the script.

The original series – which ran alongside The Addams Family – aired from 1964 to 1966 and followed the supernatural family’s lives.

While Eddie has me more interested in the remake, I still can’t say I am too excited. Plus, it’s going to be a drama, and a Munsters drama doesn’t exactly sound awesome. What do you think about The Munsters remake?
