Exclusive Interview with Anita E. Viljoen

It’s interview time! This time I was lucky enough to interview Anita E. Viljoen on her debut novel Feeders. Check out her new vampire world, her favorite vampires and more.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?
Sure, not much to tell, except I was born, raised and got married in South Africa. I immigrated to Canada  14 years ago and  now live in British Columbia with my husband of 22 years and 2 children.  Writing stories never came easy for me as I was diagnosed with dyslexia, consequently pushing me toward the arts of dancing, painting and “candle-wicking” which I still love doing. So having my book published is truly surreal and a big accomplishment.

Can you tell us about your book Feeders?
It started with a question really – what if humans have too much blood? With research I found, there are humans out there with a blood disorder called Polycythemia Vesa – it’s when the bone marrow produces too many red blood cells. These humans must have their blood let professionally, although there are many that do it themselves. I tweaked this a little,  my fictional characters that have this blood disorder are called Feeders and they belong to the McKay Vampire Council of Canada.  There are many twists and turns that makes it a sensual, exciting and interesting read.

How does Feeders differ from other novels about vampires?

Well , having vampires seeking out Feeders instead of hunting the rest of humanity is certainly different, but, let that not mislead you, there are many twists in it that will make you want to turn the page.

What got you interested in writing about vampires?

I grew up enjoying fables (fae), folklore and fantasies and with an imagination like mine, vampires fascinated me, they’re immortal and truthfully who doesn’t want to live forever healthy, wealthy and strong.

Ok, here’s a question I ask everyone I interview: I’ve noticed that most of the authors I follow on Twitter talk about the music they’re currently writing to. What kind of setting/atmosphere do you find most conducive to your writing?
LOL, Yes, I am one of them.  When the noise in the house gets a bit distracting I love to put my earphones on listen to a variety of Celtic music from  Enya – A Day Without Rain,  Loreena McKennitt –The book of Secrets to Godsmack – Awake. Depending on my mood and what scene in the book I’ writing.

Who’s your favorite fictitious vampire (other than your own)?
I would say Mick St. John (Alex O’Loughlin) in Moonlight

What is your favorite vampire book/movie/show?

Favourite book will be True Blood by Charlaine Harris / Movie the Underworld trilogy/ show (now cancelled) was Moonlight. Now Vampire Diaries

If you could ask an ancient vampire one question, what would it be?
What is it like to be part of History, to see humanity and the world change through the years?

Tell our readers why they should check out your book – in 3 words: (bwahaha)
Blood, Sex, Intrigue. (shish -I did it – LOL)

And finally, what other projects are you currently working on? Any goodies we should watch out for?
Feeders sequel called Hybrid and a third vampire novel that will surprise many, hehe

By Moonlight

Moonlight (aka Amanda) loves to write about, read about and learn about everything pertaining to vampires. You will most likely find her huddled over a book of vampire folklore with coffee in hand. Touch her coffee and she may bite you (and not in the fun way).
