Exclusive Interview with Artist Jerry Gonzales

David Doub’s Dusk Comics is a fantastic independent publisher that produces some excellent comics, such as Dusk, a vampire comic that has earned itself some truly kickass reviews. I was fortunate enough to chat with Jerry Gonzales, one of the artists that worked on the project, about Dusk, art and other vampiric goodies. Check it out:

Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I from Austin, Tx., I’ve been working as a freelance artist for about five, or more, years. I’ve had my work published in some Annuals for Antarctic Press and I’ve had a steady job at Dusk Comics. David has treated me well within his company.

Can you tell us about Dusk?
Dusk is about a woman name Eve, who was in an abusive relationship, but got out by becoming a slave for a vampire. Her current “master” Ash takes her away from her old master and tries to bring her back to her normal life. She refuses and wants to stay with Ash and stay within the culture of the supernatural and the occult.

What role did you play in the creation of Dusk?
I was mainly a penicler and inker for a single story in volume one and two. And I was just an inker for the Dusk One-Shot.

What did you love most about working on Dusk?
Oh, wow. Everything. I loved working with a writer that I had very, very few problems with. David and I had, and still have, good communication with the writing and the artwork. I love the fact that I’m part of a project that got to see the light of day. It’s a constant joy working as an artist in Dusk.

What inspires you and your artwork?
Comics. I read a lot of books ranging from Green Lantern to Ghostworld.  Music. I listen to ska and punk bands. Doing a page can go a lot faster listening to Reel Big Fish and Dillinger Four. Podcasts helps too. And watching other artist work on their craft. Thank God for YouTube.

If you were asked to draw any vampire, who would you choose?
That’s a good question. I would say Count Orlok from the 1922 film Nosferatu. Just the look of Orlok, seems more scarier than the more mainstream vampires.

What is your favorite vampire book, movie and/or show?
John Carpenter’s Vampires. Yeah it’s a little obscure, but I love how it plays out like a western. It a nice take on the genre.

Tell our readers why they should check out your work – in 3 words: (bwahaha)
More to Come. (Laughs)

And finally, what other projects are you currently working on? Any goodies we should watch out for?
Glad you asked. I have Mystery Masque out right now (www.duskcomics.com/mysterymasque.htm), written by David Doub and illustrated by yours truly. I’m co-writing with David and doing art duties on a book called Deadend, check that out sometime in spring. Also I’m working on a short film called, Zombie Shotgun (twitter page @Zombi3_Shotgun). I’m doing some animation on that. And every once and a while I’ll post something up on my blog (bigkidart.blogspot.com). And I’m working on another project that I will write and draw that will remain unnamed until I can get it fully completed.

Moonlight (aka Amanda) loves to write about, read about and learn about everything pertaining to vampires. You will most likely find her huddled over a book of vampire folklore with coffee in hand. Touch her coffee and she may bite you (and not in the fun way).
