Exclusive Interview with B.E. Scully, Author of Verland

Coming June 1st is author B.E. Scully’s Verland: The Transformation, a vampire book unlike any other. It tells the tale of true crime writer Elle Bramasol, who is drawn into a macabre mystery when incarcerated Hollywood producer Eliot Kingman asks her to write a book about his case. As she delves deeper into Kingman’s murder conviction, she discovers that he possesses a centuries old diary written by an elusive vampire named Verland. Uncovering the transformative secrets held within the diary’s pages, Elle is drawn deeper into both Kingman’s deadly schemes and Verland’s dark world of shadows. I was lucky enough to chat with B.E. Scully about his new novel, his vampiric loves and more. Check it out.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?
When I’m not rambling around the world in my vardo, you can find me in the woods of Oregon hanging out with my weird posse of human and animal companions.

Can you tell us about your book Verland?
Verland is an exploration of the transformative power of belief—our fear and fascination with the darker aspects of our existence, the mysteries of death and whatever comes next, and how all of these powerful forces can come together in ways that fundamentally change and shape our lives. Plus, it’s got a lot of cool vampire action.

How does Verland differ from other novels about vampires?
Well, for one thing, it features a vampire’s diary that will turn even hardcore skeptics into believers! But most of all, the novel is a return to the Gothic tradition of the vampire as an outcast, an isolated figure forced to exist in what I think of as the spaces in-between—those dark and shadowy places somewhere between fantasy and reality, where all of the most strange and fascinating things take place.

What is the one thing you would like people to take away from their experience of reading Verland?
I think Verland helps us to explore and embrace the things we don’t fully understand, even the dark and difficult things, while also reminding us that we can live in those spaces in-between without losing ourselves entirely to them. And most of all, perhaps, that this journey of ours is really an ongoing series of transformations, and that’s really what makes it so powerful and magical and profound.

What inspired you to write a vampire book?
The vampire embodies so many of our most primal fears and passions—the intoxicating allure of forbidden love and sexuality; the mysteries of death and the ever-elusive “prize” of immortality; the advantages and consequences of possessing such god-like powers… Vampires are the ultimate outsiders, dependent upon the very mortals in whose world they can never really belong, and that speaks very deeply to us outsiders of the more ordinary sort!

Who is your favorite fictitious vampire (other than your own)?
Fortunately the vampire myth is big enough to sustain immortals of all varieties, and I love how each artist brings something unique to our ongoing love affair with vampires. That said, I think Francis Ford Coppola really got a lot of things right in his film version of Stoker’s Dracula.

What is your favorite vampire book, movie, show?
See above!

If vampires were discovered to exist today, do you think our society would accept them or try to destroy them?
I think Verland’s story will more effectively answer that question than I can!

Tell readers why they should check out your book- in 3 words.
You’ll be transformed. Believe! (Ok, I added a fourth word, but doesn’t a 174-year-old vampire deserve one extra?)

And finally, what other projects are you currently working on? Any goodies we should watch out for?
Well, you can always check out what new madness is going on at my blog http://bescully.blogspot.com/

Moonlight (aka Amanda) loves to write about, read about and learn about everything pertaining to vampires. You will most likely find her huddled over a book of vampire folklore with coffee in hand. Touch her coffee and she may bite you (and not in the fun way).

  2. This book blew me away! I was paralyzed in an accident last October and I’m still struggling to get my life back together. This book just hit so deep. It’s so intense, dark and powerful. Verland draws you in but you know you can’t go. People see immortality as such a gift but you won’t after this! After reading this, my struggles looked a lot different. It’s that powerful!
