Exclusive Interview with Kane, Author of ‘Aleron’

Kane’s debut novel Aleron, the first in the Strigoi series, may be new to the scene but it is already earning itself high praise for its captivating tale of love, loss and betrayal. Taking his story back to the past, back to when vampires were sinister creatures worthy of darkness, Kane makes the vampire fearsome once again. I was lucky enough to speak with the author about his new novel, his views on vampires and much more. Check out the interview below and let us know what you think.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?
My affinity for writing started years before my affinity of the dirty martini. Ever since childhood, I remember retreating into my mind, unlocking my imagination through writing and hiding the results from my parents. I remember paying some friends of mine when I was in junior high to spend some time in an old abandoned parking deck stairwell, where homeless people and dead God knows what else lurked in the pitch black spaces. They were only equipped with a tape recorder and the hope of surviving long enough to collect the promised 20 bucks! It was amazing how much data I collected from my studying our most basic fears: being alone in absolute darkness.

Can you tell us about your book Aleron?
Absolutely. The story takes place in the 18th century eastern Europa and Egypt. The supreme vampire father Vlad has surrounded himself with many beautiful female vampires. He nurtures them like a father and loves them like a king to his princesses. He uses their alluring seductive powers to expand his power and wealth. Vlad allows them to do whatever they please except one thing: they are forbidden to make another male vampire. Now many of them, despite the inherent competition, lies, and betrayal, learn to live with one another in harmony accept for Mynea. Her heart longs for exclusive devotion. And she leaves the coven and seeks a king of her own in the land of Alexandria Egypt. There she encounters a human who she makes in her own image and bestows upon him the dark gift. His name is Aleron and he develops unconditional love for his maker. Mynea leaves her young prince for her ancient king and now Aleron is left alone. Neither male knows of the other until Vlad’s first immortal lover, Pandora, discovers Aleron’s blasphemous existence. Now she has what she needs to betray her newly appointed queen, Mynea, and win back Vlad’s love. However, Aleron has plans of his own once secrets are revealed!

How does Aleron differ from other novels about vampires?
Very good question. I listen to my readers and my immortal friends and this is what sets ‘Aleron’ apart: Vampires have dual natures, they are both beautiful and beastly. Vampires use to be something to fear, something to cower in the presence of. Modern vampire tales have distorted the traditional view of the Strigoi. Instead of fearing these fiends, people want to be them. My novel brings back the notion of immortality of tortured souls. The love and and hate vampires must endure in an effort to survive a millennia. Imagine that everything around you constantly changed; the culture, the peoples of the various lands, and the entire world itself. Yet, you do not.  ‘Aleron’ also has a setting in the 17th through 19th century which brings more historical value to the tale being told. Questions I answer are born from the original vampire folklore and legends of prince Vlad Tepes III and Elizabeth Bathory, both of which will have books dedicated to them by me in the near future. Vampires are angelically demonic and ‘Aleron’ embodies both. In a nutshell, I am putting the bite back into the vampire genre.

What is the one thing you would like people to take away from their experience of reading Aleron?
I would like for readers to come away felling refreshed from a magnificently told story, as well as a need to continue reading the Strigoi Series, and any other book I will write. I will always give fans more than 100% when it comes to tickling all of their senses. Fans will be confident that I for when will not let them down when it comes to my research and storytelling.

What inspired you to write Aleron?
What has inspired me most is my insistent new immortal friend. You know, how do you deny a vampire? Aleron is very insistent, not that he needed to be. The story of the Strigoi is a fascinating one. Tales I would gladly tell until I can no longer write. Anne Rice and Bram Stoker are my favorite authors. Bram Stoker brought the modern day vampire into being while Anne Rice offered a window into the lives of immortals in an elegantly seductive way. Perfection is her book Memnock The Devil. I think I will read it again tonight

Who is your favorite fictitious vampire (other than your own)?
My favorite vampire would have to be Vlad Tepes, aka Dracula. A close second is the vampire Lestat.

What is your favorite vampire book, movie, show?
My favorite vampire book is Memnock the Devil by Anne Rice. LOVE IT! Bram Stoker’s Dracula is my favorite vampire movie, and I don’t watch any vampire TV shows, especially since I am writing in the genre and want little to no influence with what is currently out right now.

Given the current vampire craze, people feel especially attracted to vampires, why do you think that is?
That’s a very loaded question. People have been and always will be attracted to vampires because they personify the supernatural realm. People tend to identify more with heroes or villains who are preternaturally strong and are not perfect, that can be hurt or even destroyed. Ironically, more than the bloodlust and super strength, speed, and other fantastical abilities, people identify more with the humanity and sensuality of the vampire. Vampires often do what many people wish they could, save drinking another’s blood.

Tell readers why they should check out your book- in 3 words.
You want it!

And finally, what other projects are you currently working on? Any goodies we should watch out for?
Of course I can’t leave fans hanging for long, so I am diving deeper into Mynea and Vlad’s tale which will be revealed in Book 2 of the Strigoi Series. I am also working on The Nephilim Project which is a fantastical tale about the beauty and evil when God’s True Sons (Angles) embrace the sensuality of the daughters of humankind as well as the division that occurred in Heaven through Satan’s challenge. Nephilim is guaranteed to quench that romantic and supernatural thirst of yours. And in the not so distant future, you can expect to see our hero Aleron on the BIG Screen!

Moonlight (aka Amanda) loves to write about, read about and learn about everything pertaining to vampires. You will most likely find her huddled over a book of vampire folklore with coffee in hand. Touch her coffee and she may bite you (and not in the fun way).
