Exclusive Interview with Kristy Berridge Author of ‘The Hunted’

If you’re one of the many readers out there sick of the predictable characters, the Mary Sue’s and the whiny pretty boys, then check out the interview below! I recently chatted with Kristy Berridge about her new book The Hunted, which switches things up a bit and breaks away from the stereotypical characters found in so many books lately.

Can you tell us about your book The Hunted?
The Hunted explores the growth of Elena Manory who is born to become a vampire on her eighteenth birthday. She can self-heal and enjoys the smell of blood, but crafts life as a human even though she’s more than aware that she’s a little different from other girls her age. Raised by her adopted family – The Protectors (descendants of a three hundred year old magical clan), she is sheltered and without knowledge of the vampire heritage that runs through her veins. It isn’t until she meets William Granville, another born vampire like herself that is determined to open her heart and mind to the possibilities of her future existence. Unfortunately, the Vânătors (werewolves), also have their sights set on this intriguing girl and her connection to them all, consequently wreaking havoc in their efforts to bring her into their pack. Elena’s blood becomes the key to many secrets and also to the many plots that are yet to unfold.

How does The Hunted differ from other novels about vampires?
It steers clear of the expected. My heroin is self-sufficient and determined. She’s not needy, clumsy or constantly crying out to be saved. She’s not afraid to curse, not afraid to take someone out if the situation calls for it, and not afraid to give love the old one finger salute if it gets in the way of her objective. The vampires aren’t pretty boys, afraid to get their hands dirty, and the violence is real, gritty, and sometimes confronting. The hunted sets the stage for the next four books to come, incorporating not just Elena’s story, but the characters she revolves around and those that are affected by her choices.

Where did you get the idea for The Hunted?
I’ve always loved the supernatural genre, so sitting down to write about something that makes my pulse race was almost too easy. There has been a few rewrites along the way, but generally just the smallest idea blossoms and my fingers start to fly across the keyboard. I just wanted to write about a heroine who for once wasn’t predictable.

What is one thing you would like people to take away from their experience of reading The Hunted?
To not be able to put the book down, to reach the final page in excitement and then hunger for more. But I also think that to be able to immerse yourself in the story and feel what the characters feel – that would be an achievement.

Given the current vampire craze, people feel especially attracted to vampires, why do you think that is?
Because the picture we paint of these fictional characters is romantic, dangerous – the allure being that they are everything we’re not. As immortals you have eternity to enjoy the possibilities of life, to explore the forbidden and continuously learn. The lure of forever and the chance to shape into something more than ordinary would undoubtedly appeal to a broad spectrum of people – me included.

Who’s your favorite fictitious vampire (other than your own)?
Bram Stoker’s Dracula – a vampire that doesn’t apologize for what he is and how he must live, yet still vulnerable to emotion.

What is your favorite vampire book, movie, and/or show?
Book: I really enjoy anything written by Laurell.K.Hamilton (Anita Blake)
Movie: Underworld Series.
TV Show: True Blood all the way!

Tell our readers why they should check out your book – in 3 words: (bwahaha)
Menacing. Enticing. Unpredictable.

And finally, what other projects are you currently working on? Any goodies we should watch out for?
There’s another four books to come in this series, finishing off Elena’s story, so keep your eyes peeled and watch for updates on my website www.kristyberridge.com

Moonlight (aka Amanda) loves to write about, read about and learn about everything pertaining to vampires. You will most likely find her huddled over a book of vampire folklore with coffee in hand. Touch her coffee and she may bite you (and not in the fun way).

    1. Hmm you’re a bit quick to judge. Maybe read the book before thinking so harshly of it. If you look at every book like that then you miss out on a lot of good reads.

      1. Don´t get me wrong, I enjoy book reviews and author interviews. But if I´m not interested, I don´t buy the book. And claiming action heroines are “new and unpredictable” IS irritating lie.

  3. Having read this book from cover to cover and enjoyed its new twist on the whole vampire thing, I find the above comments very strange.
Maybe more encouragement could be shown to a new author.

Thanks for a great read, cant wait for the next installment.

    Pete
