Exclusive Interview with Lauren Hammond

Lauren Hammond published her first novel in 2007, since then she went on to write several screenplays, a few award winning poems, and of course, a vampire book titled Love Sucks. Thanks to the magical world known as Twitter, I was lucky enough to score an interview with the author.

Can you tell us about your book Love Sucks?

Love Sucks is a first person narrative told through the eyes of a newborn vampire. You follow the main character Cara Jones from the time she’s turned in the early 1700’s, to when she awakens in the year 2010.
You follow her through her years of life as she tries to discover what she is, her acceptance of what she is, and trying to find love in the process.

What got you interested in writing about vampires?

When I had my first mental image of Cara Jones, I knew I needed to write this book. I knew that her story needed to be told.  The whole vampire genre has fascinated me for most of my life. Ever since I was a kid.
I like that there is so much history to the vampire stories dating all the way back to the 15th century.

Here’s a question I ask all authors I interview: I’ve noticed that most of the authors I follow on Twitter talk about the music they’re currently writing to. What kind of setting/atmosphere do you find most conducive to your writing?

Most of the time, I write in the morning or really late at night. Depending on my mood I like it really quiet or sometimes I blast itunes from my computer. Then again, it all depends on my mood.

How would you describe yourself in three words?

Intuiative. Intriguing. Quirky.

Who’s your favorite fictitious vampire (other than your own)?

Lestat. One name, enough said.

What is your favorite vampire book/movie/show?
Well books, there are way too many to count. As far as shows go, I never miss an episode of True Blood or The Vampire Diaries. Both are brilliant shows.

What was the last book you read? Would you recommend it?
Honestly, I haven’t had too much time for books lately. But the Last one I read was Dead In The Family by Charlaine Harris. I loved it! I would recommend it to anyone!

If you could ask an ancient vampire one question, what would it be?
What is it like to live forever?

And finally, what other projects are you currently working on? Any goodies we should watch out for?
Love Sucks has been getting a good amount of positive attention therefore a sequel is in order. A Sucker For Love will be out sometime in the summer of 2011.

Moonlight (aka Amanda) loves to write about, read about and learn about everything pertaining to vampires. You will most likely find her huddled over a book of vampire folklore with coffee in hand. Touch her coffee and she may bite you (and not in the fun way).
