Exclusive Interview with Thomas Winship

I have a fantastic treat for you today Dear Readers – an interview! Yay! I had the pleasure of interviewing Thomas Winship, the author of a new vampire book titled Vaempires: Revolution. Check it out and let us know what you think in a comment below!

Can you tell us about your book Vaempires: Revolution?
The basic premise of the book is the question: what if vampires evolved?

Here’s a synopsis:

In the future, humans trigger a nuclear winter that lasts for hundreds of years. Water levels rise. The shape of the world changes. When the world recovers, vampires emerge from the radioactive darkness. For a millennium, humans and vampires fight for supremacy… until synthetic human blood is created, ushering in a period of peace and prosperity.

And the world changes yet again. Vampires begin morphing into væmpires (pronounced without the “a” as vempires), warm-blooded creatures with an insatiable hunger for cold vampire blood. There is no rhyme or reason as to who morphs—male or female, old or young, from one end of the world to another—no vampire is safe. And no human is safe, either, because these væmpires aren’t interested in coexistence. They want three things: the eradication of humanity, the enslavement of vampires, and their ascension as the dominant species on the planet.

It is the morning of Princess Cassandra’s sixteenth birthday. With the world’s attention focused on the heir to the vampire throne, væmpires revolt. In their initial attack, they kill the vampire and human leaders and take over the capital. By nightfall, the hopes of the free world rest on the shoulders of Cassandra, her boyfriend, Daniel, and their friends. Then væmpires unleash their secret weapons… væmpires with special powers.

What can four teens do against an enemy that can shape-shift, create walls of flame, or walk through walls?

How does Vaempires: Revolution differ from other novels about vampires?
I can’t say for certain that the concepts have never been covered, so I’m responding from the standpoint of the vampire novels I see populating the shelves at my local bookstore.  Vaempires: Revolution isn’t paranormal romance.  It isn’t erotica.  It’s a sci-fi/horror/action novel that pits humans alongside vampires against mutated vaempires with super powers.  Since vaempires feed on vampires, the dynamic between vaempires and vampires is much the same as the traditional dynamic between vampires and humans.  As such, vampires in my story are far more human than in your average vampire story.

Furthermore, many of the traditional ingredients are not present: vampires don’t suck human blood, no one is “turned” one way or the other, garlic/crosses/holy water plays no part, etc.

What inspired you to write about vampires?
Nothing in particular.  Of course, it’s nearly impossible to have existed during the last decade and not be influenced/inspired by the proliferation of vampires in entertainment.  One day I simply thought, “What if vampires evolved?”  I was probably watching Underworld.

What is one thing you would like people to take away from their experience of reading Vaempires: Revolution?
I’d like people to walk away from reading Vaempires: Revolution as awestruck as the person reading Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings for the first time was.  Now, since I am certainly not Tolkien, I’d settle for a person being satisfied that my novel was an entertaining expenditure of time.

If vampires were discovered to exist today, do you think our society would accept them or try to destroy them?
Unfortunately, we would destroy them (or force them to destroy us).  The medical community would tear them apart, governments/the military would either subjugate them or attempt to destroy them, the media/paparazzi would bleed them dry, and too many “average” humans would give into irrational fear.  I won’t even comment on the religious community.

Who’s your favorite fictitious vampire (other than your own)?
Ryan Alexander from the Blood Legacy series by Kerri Hawkins

Runners-up:
The comic character Vampi
Tommy Flood from Christopher Moore’s vampire trilogy
Eli/Abby from the films Let the Right One In/Let Me In.

What is your favorite vampire book, movie and/or show?
‘Salem’s Lot by Stephen King.  In fact, I just guest-blogged about it for VampChix.

Tell our readers why they should check out your book – in 3 words: (bwahaha)
Readers should check out the book because…

It’s bloody good

It doesn’t suck (or bite!)

I’m starving here!

I said please!

And finally, what other projects are you currently working on? Any goodies we should watch out for?
Vaempires: Revolution is the first book in a series, The Evolutionary War.  I’m currently working on book two for an early 2012 release. I’m also working on a short story supplement, Vaempires: White Christmas, for release next month.

Moonlight (aka Amanda) loves to write about, read about and learn about everything pertaining to vampires. You will most likely find her huddled over a book of vampire folklore with coffee in hand. Touch her coffee and she may bite you (and not in the fun way).
