Fright Night Updates Plus Casting News

As it has been previously mentioned, a remake of the eighties film Fright Night is in the works. Some new updates have been revealed so here’s what we know so far:

Dreamworks has picked up the project with Michael De Luca producing, Craig Gillespie directing and screenwriting duties going to Marti Noxon. Marti Noxon‘s previous vampire credits include executive producer, director, writer and story editor on both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel so it sounds like the script should be in good hands. As to date the story will still revolve around young Charley Brewster who suspects his dashing new next door neighbour Jerry Dandrige is in fact a blood sucking fiend from beyond the grave.

Now on to the big news, casting updates. Of course the biggest casting news is that Colin Farrell (Miami Vice, Daredevil, Alexander) has been signed on to play the role of vampire heartthrob Jerry Dandrige, a role previously played by Chris Sarandon in the original back in ’85. Joining Farrell will be Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, Terminator Salvation) as Charley Brewster and Toni Collette (United States of Tara, Little Miss Sunshine, The Sixth Sense) as Charley’s mom. It doesn’t look as if the roles of Amy Peterson, Peter Vincent or ‘Evil’ Ed Thompson have been filled yet. I know that I for one shall be sobbing buckets of blood if there is no Evil Ed, I love that guy.

When asked by Collider.Com why there was a decision to remake Fright Night, producer Michael De Luca had this to say:

And with Fright Night, with all the romantic vampire stuff going on with The Vampire Diaries and True Blood and Twilight, the most obvious. We thought it would be interesting if, in this atmosphere of the way the vampire is being portrayed right now as a romantic object, under the wire of all that in the culture the real thing moves in next door. And the real thing is a killer. Just a predator. It’s the shark from Jaws. On the outside it’s a seductive package and it looks like a human being, but it’s just about ripping your throat out and drinking your blood. And introducing that kind of vampire into the current environment.

So it looks like Fright Night is at least off to a good start, lets just hope it stays that way. No release date has been scheduled yet but it looks as if viewers can expect Fright Night to be released some time in 2011.

  6. HMMMM…another remake? I certainly hope they maintain the original prime players (like Evil, he was outstanding). There is little doubt that they can out special effects the original movie, however, let’s hope that the latest edition will have the outstanding melding of cast that made the movie such a hit and a Vampire LEGEND of a picture. How sad that there are so few original ideas out there. I will see it but wait for it to go to DVD. Here’s hoping for the best…

  8. Whatever the hell Michael De Luca said about this movie being all about a Vampire who just wants to rip everybody’s throat out. That is not entirely true! Yes Jerry is an evil bloodsucker, but is everyone forgetting that he is in love with Amy in the movie! He doesn’t want to kill her, he wants to seduce her! I sure as hell hope they do not change the whole story of the 1980’s Fright Night or i will be disappointed. The cast looks good so far, especially cause Mclovin is playing Evil Ed YES!!!! But if they screw up on the casting of Amy….so help me!!!!!
