Gloating about PENNY DREADFUL

I’m not. Gloating, that is. I wouldn’t. A lot of people worked on that new PENNY DREADFUL series from Showtime. Those folks are all out of a job now. I’m sure they’ll bounce back just fine, but still. I won’t take any pleasure in their misfortune, even if it’s a small misfortune overall. I’ve also heard the show wasn’t that good. This is secondhand information, as I never watched it. I wouldn’t watch it. Refused to watch it. But I trust the opinions of the people who told me that it wasn’t good. And apparently the viewers agreed by and large with those opinions, since Showtime did cancel the series after one season. I won’t take pleasure in that. I won’t gloat.

It is satisfying, though. John Logan, creator of both the original PENNY DRADFUL and this new series, lied about the end of the original. He made a spur-of-the-moment decision to pull the plug on the show, leaving all the fans hanging, then claimed it had always been his intention. If it was, he’d kept that information to himself, and had gone on record numerous times saying otherwise. He showed utter disrespect to the fans of the show. Then he decided, needing more water, perhaps, that he wanted to go back to the well. Why should we ever trust him again, I asked when news first came out about the new series, after what he pulled the first time? He screwed us all over. Why should we give him the chance to do it again? In short: people didn’t.

His new series failed. It tanked. I refuse to gloat. But it is fitting.
