There used to be a strip club bordering Quality Studios called “Gold-Diggers.” The latter has been recreated. Now it is a “bar/boutique hotel/recording studio.” The current owners purchased the property three years ago and they’ve given it a right proper facelift. All the seediness is gone, replaced with polish and shine. The old 1920s structure has never looked better. There’s a glitzy bar, and the two floors above it serve as a hotel. The smaller building in back, formerly Quality Studios, is now Kingsize Soundlabs, a state-of-the-art recording studio. The new owners made a real effort to preserve the latter’s “personality.” I’m thrilled to see this property preserved and restored, grateful to the new owners for showing the old building the love it deserves.
Quality Studios, as all self-respecting geeks know, was where Ed Wood filmed PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE. We could have easily lost this piece of cinematic history to neglect and demolition. It took a considerable investment to bring the property back to the level it must have once enjoyed. By the time Ed was filming there it had already become something of a dive—which of course only added to its charm. That charm, the aura, the magic, remains. I’m glad the new owners realize that.
