DC Comics is shelving its Vertigo line. The degree to which that means anything to you depends on your individual viewpoint. DC started Vertigo in the early 90s as a separate imprint under which it could release its adult-centered books. Credit Alan Moore, Steve Bissette, and John Totleben and their work on the comic series SWAMP THING for making it both possible and necessary. The other book that will always stand head and shoulders above the rest of the Vertigo lot is Neil Gaiman’s THE SANDMAN. Dc will continue to publish adult-oriented comics. They just won’t be Vertigo books anymore; at least the word Vertigo won’t be appearing on the covers.
And speaking of Gaiman’s SANDMAN…
Netflix will be airing a new live-action THE SANDMAN series based on Gaiman’s character and stories. An order has been put in for ten (or maybe eleven) episodes. Says Netflix of the series: “A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven, THE SANDMAN follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic—and human—mistakes he’s made during his vast existence.” Let’s just hope this goes over better than that new (and already cancelled) SWAMP THING series.
