vampire games, vampire news, and real vampires

Happy Anniversary, Lost Boys!

First off, I’d like to offer a little piece of advice to the young whippersnappers out there: don’t be in such a hurry to reach that magical number 21, or even the almost as magical 18. Enjoy being where you are in life, right now. THE LOST BOYS debuted in theaters three decades ago this week. I remember it well. And I swear it seems like it was 10 minutes ago. You blink your eyes, and 30 years have passed. It’s crazy. So, as John COUGAR (He’ll always be “Cougar” to me!) Mellencamp sang, “Hold on to 16 (I was 16 when THE LOST BOYS came out) as long as you can. Changes come around real soon, make us women and men.”

There are those movies that are instant classics. THE LOST BOYS is the other kind. It took the passage of years for it to achieve the standing it enjoys, for it to achieve the reverence it deserves. None of us realized at the time, at least I sure didn’t, that THE LOST BOYS was a touchstone of vampire cinema. It is THE 80s vampire movie. (The only other possible contender for this title is FRIGHT NIGHT.) Yet, despite the haircuts (Kiefer Sutherland’s David has the most righteous mullet EVAH!) and the fashion, despite the undeniable 80s aesthetic–or maybe in part because of it–the movie remains, like its vampires, ageless. Stay lost, boys. Stay lost forever.

It’s STILL fun to be a vampire.
