No, I didn’t just make that up. HBO is actually selling handbags inspired by True Blood characters over on their website. Why do I find the idea so appalling? Because the cheapest purse offered (the “Sookie” bag) is $395, yes, that’s the cheapest they go. The most expensive is the “Lafayette” purse which costs an insane $675! What the hell is HBO thinking? There’s no way the average True Blood fan can afford these purses, purses that really aren’t all that great looking to begin with, purses that are actually pretty blah and ugly. Are they trying to alienate their fanbase? Ugh, but oh, it gets better, for every purse comes with a cute little description. Let’s have a peek at a few of them shall we.
Alcide Handbag – $485
“Weres run hot and so does this bag which is inspired by Alcide Herveaux. While the luxurious, supple leather and soft faux fur suggest a more benign side, a darker element is revealed through the signature Hammitt rivets on the handle and through the fierce wolf image which is printed on the underside of the bag flap. Why not wear a little were?”
…ahahahaha! Wow, I never released that a single purse could say SO much. But there’s more, like the Eric bag!
Eric Handbag – $445
“The sheriff of Area 5, Eric Northman, has been known to take silver bullets for a certain telepathic waitress. This bag is black, one of Eric’s favorite colors, and while it appears simple and clean from the front, it is richly accented with a scattering of bullet-shaped studs and flat rivets on the gussets.”
I have nothing against those that love fashion and I have no extreme hatred for True Blood, but this is ridiculous. If they had reasonable prices that normal people could afford then it wouldn’t be as bad. HBO could have turned this into a fun thing for hardcore fans, but instead they have alienated the majority of their viewers. Bad move HBO.
