I Watched MTV’s Death Valley and…

…it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting.

Death Valley is a new mockumentary brought to us via MTV. This show is like Cops, or rather, like Reno 911 since it’s a fake cop show. However, this comedy is a little different than Reno 911 for the cops of Death Valley deal with vampires, werewolves and zombies. Check out the trailer to fully understand the ridiculousness.

Now that you know what you’re getting into let’s move on to the review. Joy.

Ok, so I finally caught the pilot episode of Death Valley and within the first 30 seconds I already had an issue with it – the camerawork. The camera shakes around so much it actually managed to make me dizzy, I mean, I understand it’s a mockumentary so the camerawork is supposed to be craptacular, but no cameraman on any documentary I have ever seen has been that bad, not even on Cops. Luckily the show improves after that Blair Witch-like chase scene. There are some pretty hilarious one-liners, which are mixed in with some of the most cliché jokes ever, but luckily there’s enough funny in there to make it enjoyable.

Speaking of funny, the characters Joe and Billy are definitely the best out of the whole gang. If it wasn’t for this duo the show would most likely be a colossal fail since the rest of the show’s characters are far too stereotypical to be entertaining.

“I’m sorry! I don’t speak vampire!”
“It’s Spanish you idiot!”

Yes, Billy and Joe amuse me.

Other than the on and off comedy, there were a few other notable parts of the show. The fight scenes were, I admit, pretty badass and the special effects were surprisingly good. They went all out on the monster makeup and it looks horrifically realistic, which earns the show major bonus points.

So all in all, I didn’t hate Death Valley. For a mockumentary it’s pretty well-done and entertaining. It’s definitely an over-the-top and ridiculous show, but that’s kind of the whole point. I can’t say I’ll follow the show religiously, but if it’s on I won’t rush to change the channel like I do with 99% of MTV’s other shows.

In case you missed Death Valley and want to give it a shot, you can watch the complete first episode over on MTV’s website.

  3. watched it to know and don’t quit now what to think yet … I think it has potential I’ll need to see some more off it to truly make a judgment

  5. I viewed the show last night and I’m not sure what to think either.

I thought it was more comedic than anything. I did like the vampire scene in the club. The actor playing the vampire wasn’t great though.

I thought the cops rolling over the zombie was funny.

The one copy talking about smelly balls was annoying – very juvenile and frat-boy like. But it is MTV.

I would say 30 minutes was the right length for the show and should appeal to those with ADHD!
