Idols of Clay

The hits keep on coming where Joss Whedon is concerned. David Boreanaz and James Marsters have both broken their respective silences on the accusations made against Whedon by Charisma Carpenter (and then by Michelle Trachtenberg) and their comments were supportive. And Anthony Stewart Head, while he made no accusations of his own to add to the mix, did acknowledge those made by others as legitimate, saying he felt “gutted” by them, and the fact that he wasn’t, during the run of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, more aware of the treatment some of his costars were receiving. Joss Whedon, meanwhile, and not surprisingly, has been silent on the whole thing. What else can he do? His only options are to play Donald Trump and maintain “They’re ALL lying! Only *I* speak the truth!” or own up to it, and a simple “oops” probably wouldn’t suffice.

Marilyn Manson is likewise facing career death, and likewise justifiably. With Manson, though, I honestly don’t know why anyone was surprised by the allegations made against him. This is a guy who has never hidden the type person he is. He told the world right from the start who and what he is. Now that it’s been confirmed by others, people, some people, are acting surprised.

If I were a Hollywood type with a history of abusive behavior, I wouldn’t be feeling too comfortable right now. The atmosphere is perfect for long-buried accusations to be brought to light and new ones to sprout. The era of the protected abusers appears to be at an end.
