In Memoriam: Ben Cross

This one makes me sad. The headline I saw announced that Cross, actor appearing in STAR TREK and CHARIOTS OF FIRE, had died. In all honesty, Mr. Cross will probably be remembered more for the latter project, but to me, no other role he ever played ever came close to that of Barnabas Collins in the reboot series DARK SHADOWS. I saw it long before I ever got to see any of the original. Ben Cross was my Barnabas before I met Jonathan Frid. Again, in all honesty, the original DARK SHADOWS eclipses its revival series, and Jonathan Frid’s portrayal of vampire Barnabas Collins will always be the definitive one, hands down. That doesn’t mean there was anything wrong with Cross’s portrayal. Much the opposite. The guy was golden in the role; he anchored the whole series. If the suits in offices at NBC hadn’t been stupid and cancelled the show, despite it having good ratings, in order to focus on news programming, Ben Cross would be far better known for his work in the series.

Sadly, the DARK SHADOWS reboot wasn’t even listed among his accomplishments in the article I read. Cross was only 72. I didn’t know he was even that old. Dude was a phenomenal actor. If you’ve seen him in DARK SHADOWS, you already know that.
