In Memoriam: Rutger Hauer

He will probably be most remembered for his role in 1982’s BLADE RUNNER, where he set the whole hero/villain thing on its head by portraying a character, an android or “replicant,” more sympathetic to the viewer than was than the movie’s protagonist. To the hardcore Horror faithful, he will always be the embodiment of the villain in THE HITCHER. And for me personally, my favorite role of his was as the titular HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN in the underappreciated gory gem from 2011. But Rutger Hauer, as accomplished an actor as anyone living today, for sure earned his vampire cred, too, and he has his imdb profile to prove it.

Hauer portrayed Lothos the vampire lord in the 1992 film BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. He was in HEMOGLOBIN (aka BLEEDERS), played Dracula in DRACULA III: LEGACY and Van Helsing in Dario Argento’s DRACULA 3D, and appeared in numerous episodes of TRUE BLOOD. In addition, he was the first choice of Anne Rice to portray Lestat in the film version of INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE, the role that eventually went to Tom Cruise. Hauer, in addition to being an actor, was a noted environmentalist and advocate for AIDS research. A classy and talented gentleman and a gifted performer, he will be missed.
