Interview with Vasiliy Fet, Part One

I had the extreme pleasure of taking part in an hour-long conference call with actor Kevin Durand, who plays the towering Ukrainian exterminator turned vampire killer Vasiliy Fet on THE STRAIN. Knowing I would not be provided with a transcript of the interview, my writing hand was aching by the end of the call from scribbling notes, but it was worth it to get some great quotes and insights from Kevin. And this time, unlike when I got to take part in a call with Durand’s fellow STRAIN star Corey Stoll (Eph Goodweather), I actually got to talk to him personally. Kevin, that is. He laughed when I told him he was my favorite “Human” character on the series—Hey, I had to be honest, didn’t I?—and he told me I made his day when I informed him that my lovely wife thinks he is gorgeous. (Glad to oblige, Kevin.)

I have to say, I found him to be refreshingly down to earth and a genuinely nice, friendly guy. I could easily imagine the smile that lit up his face when he talked about his new baby girl, and how he was enjoying the current hiatus from the show, spending time simply being a new father. And I really liked how he admitted that he watches the show himself as a fan, and how much he loves interacting with the fans. My overall impression was of a guy you’d enjoy sitting and having a drink with, one who takes his craft seriously and who has a real appreciation and gratitude to be in the position he is in. I liked him a lot.

More on the interview coming up.
