Introducing the Class of 2019

This year was a great one for Horror, as was last year. What about the coming year? It too looks promising. Shall we peruse some of the samplings that will be served to us at our local cinemaplexes at various points in 2019?

Let’s start with the one I’m most excited about, GLASS, which we’ll get to see in the first part of the new year. It’s the sequel and mash-up to both UNBREAKABLE and SPLIT, and if it can live up to its potential it’s gonna freakin’ ROCK. Next on my list in terms of raising my adrenaline levels is the second chapter to IT. I’m hoping to enjoy it—make that enjoy IT—more than I did the first installment. Not that I didn’t love the first installment. It’s just that I had hoped to love it *more.* I still had the Tim Curry version in my head, and Bill Skarsgard’s Pennywise just couldn’t measure up. With the sequel, hopefully the distance will help me not to compare B-Skars’s performance with anything except his previous performance as the menacing clown.

What else we got in 2019? A revamp of the GRUDGE franchise, which doesn’t interest me at all, nor do I expect it to do anything more than the THE RING revamp did recently, which is to say do nothing at all. The NEW MUTANTS movie has had such a history of backstage foibles that I can’t generate any hope for it, and while I will surely go see the remake of PET SEMATARY, it is a new version of SALEM’S LOT that I really want.
The big-screen version of ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK? looks promising, and considering ANNABELLE 2 was way better than its predecessor, and that the plot for ANNABELLE 3 sounds like NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM done at the Warren’s occult museum, with the possessed doll turning loose all the other cursed items, I’m down. Lastly, THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA could be the next INSIDIOUS or it could be the next SLENDER MAN. I’m hoping for the former.
