JEEPERS CREEPERS 3 Premiere Cancelled After Protest
The Horror community is divided on whether or not the film JEEPERS CREEPERS 3 should ever be released. This has nothing to do with the quality of the film or its subject matter. It’s because of the criminal history of writer/director Victor Salva. Salva is a convicted pedophile.
My view on it is this: When a criminal, any criminal, is released on parole, he is not only expected to get a job, he is required to do so to keep from being sent back to prison. If a convicted sex offender got a job at McDonalds (and I guarantee you there are many, many convicted sex offenders who work at McDonalds), I doubt anybody would say we should all boycott McDonalds because of it. The way Salva earns a living just happens to be by making movies. To me, it’s a dangerous thing if we start trying to say what kinds of jobs are acceptable and what kinds aren’t for ex-cons to hold. And like it or not, the man DID serve his time. Should he have received a harsher punishment than his 18 months in a treatment facility? No arguments from me there. But that’s something to take up with the State wherein Salva was sentenced and the judge who did the sentencing.
I will still eat at McDonalds. And I will go see JEEPERS CREEPERS 3 when it comes out, or, if the protesters succeed in preventing its release, the way they stopped a special advanced screening in Los Angeles recently, I will watch it on DVD. This does not mean that I in any way excuse the crimes of Victor Salva.
As it stands right now, JEEPERS CREEPERS 3 will be released for one night in theaters nationwide, on September 26th. That’s a Tuesday. I will be in attendance. I will also vote for harsher criminal sentencing for sex offenders, if such an option ever shows up on the ballot. For me, there is no conflict betwixt these two actions.
