Joss Whedon’s Thoughts on Buffy Remake

As I mentioned before, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is returning to the big screen, but this film has no ties to the Buffy creator Joss Whedon or the rest of the beloved Buffy cast and crew. That’s right, they’re creating a Buffy movie without any of the people that made Buffy amazing. As I’m sure you can imagine, Whedon isn’t too happy about this.

Warner Bros. has picked up the movie rights to the remake, which will be written by Whit Anderson, an actress-turned-screenwriter with no ties to the original Buffy movie or the TV show.

Details of the film are top secret, but “while this is not your high school Buffy, she’ll be just as witty, tough, and sexy as we all remember her to be,” producer Charles Roven claimed in a statement.

Buffy was originally a 1992 movie starring Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry, but Joss Whedon’s script for that flick was altered SO much that Joss walked off the set and never returned. He later got the Buffy he wanted when he created the TV show, the show which puts the original movie to shame on every level.

Now, to the chagrin of us fans, Whedon is not involved with the movie remake and he seems less than impressed about the project.

“I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER,” he said to E! Online.

“I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I’m also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can’t wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill.”

Don’t worry Joss Whedon, we’ll think ill of them for you. You can’t have Buffy without Whedon – it’s blasphemy. Being the colossal Buffy fangirl that I am there’s absolutely no way I am supporting this ridiculous remake.

What about the other Buffy fans out there, what do you think of the remake sans Whedon?

  1. I will give it a chance. Interestingly, I read an interview with the scriptwriter. She is a huge fan of the t.v. series and sees her job as doing for “Buffy” what “Batman Begins” did for the Caped Crusader. A tall order, but since she’s going to try I say let us hope it turns out well. If it doesn’t, well that’ll teach ’em.

  6. I will give it a chance but I don’t think it will be as good. Unless they get actors I have been wanting to see as vampires and the like who never have been before. Now that would be interesting. If you play attention to WWe you might have heard of The Undertaker. I would love to see him play Spike or Angel.

  8. I’ll give it a shot, but my hopes aren’t high. I can’t Imagine a Buffy movie without the main characters from the serie, I mean there still alive and not stone old so why not use the originel cast or atleast one of them with the hole theme going.
I’ll definitely WILL MISS Joss Whendon’s input.

  9. I have read about season 8 but lost interest when when I read wolves at the gate for I dónt see Buffy as lesbian or bi

  11. I hate this idea. I would love for Buffy to come back I miss Spike and Xander. But to do this with out Joss or any of the original cast is just crazy. Hey I would even love to See Luke Perry’s character again. Joss and the cast are what made me fall in love with the series. I don’t think I would have continued watching it if there was no James Marsters, Nicholas Brendon or Allison Hanigan.

  12. My full experience with comic books boils down to rdaieng three or four collections after the monthly run is done and they’ve been put into a bound book. Of those, there are only two that I recommend to casual comic people like myself. The first is The Dark Knight Returns, which is Frank Miller’s Batman series. It’s pretty good, though it helps if you already like Batman. With the success of 300 and Sin City, there are new rumors that Warner Bros. is interested in turning the comic into a movie. The other is Watchmen by Allen Moore, and this is the one I’d say anybody, even non-comic fans, could read and enjoy.I’ve never been too interested in the serial comic books like the Buffy one you’re talking about, but if you wait until the whole series is done, I’m sure it’ll be released in a complete collection.
