Coming up on VOD on March 31, KICKING BLOOD treats vampires as if they were alcoholics, with the battle to beat addiction a commonality between them. The spiel: “Alanna Bale stars as a modern-day vampire who falls for a charming recovering alcoholic and resolves to quit drinking blood and become human again.” And said the film’s director, Blaine Thurier (who also co-wrote the screenplay): “We wanted to make a meaningful film about the human side of vampires: What do they say about us, about our desires, our appetites, our fears and weaknesses? Vampires suffer through an eternal cycle of murder, getting high off their victims’ blood, and suffering blood hangovers. But for our protagonist, Anna, the emptiness, loneliness, and futility of immortality surfaces after centuries of bloodshed and she starts on a journey to recovery and back to humanity. Kicking Blood approaches this journey with respect while still reflecting the humour in all of it.”
Interesting. If handled properly, this could be a winner. Check out the trailer here.
So what if vampires didn’t really *need* blood to survive? What if instead they just really, really liked it? Throw in a conscience and you have the makings for a most conflicted vampire.
Interestingly enough, the late Anne Rice once said that recovering addicts and alcoholics told her how much her “Vampire Chronicles” helped them kick their habits? Can you REALLY go” cold turkey” from blood sucking though?
My theory is that a vampire might hold out for a while, but eventually the urge would drive him/her mad, and the vampire would attack the nearest source of fresh blood without restraint.
