King Kong and Jason

Adam Wingard is a big ol’ geek, a true Horror mark. His recent success story GODZILLA VS. KONG is full of easter eggs, little homages to past entries in the pantheon of Godzilla and King Kong movies. Turns out there are other references, too, the way Michael Dougherty put visual references to other Horror classics like THE EXORCIST in his own GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS. One of the properties Wingard paid tribute to was FRIDAY THE 13TH, in particular my favorite of all the Jason movies, JASON X!

Said Wingard on Reddit: ““The big reference that I haven’t seen anyone pick up on is when Kong folds up and kills Nozuki (aka warbat) that was inspired by the holo deck murder scene in JASON X when Jason picks up the camper in their sleeping bag and smashes them around.”

The scene Wingard mentions is the funniest in an overall funny movie. This comical element is the reason many fans of the FRIDAY THE 13TH franchise don’t care for JASON X. They feel it was too silly. I, however, loved it *for* its inherent silliness, the same way I loved GODZILLA VS. KONG for its over-the-top Rock Concert approach to storytelling. (You can read my review of that film over on our sister site DARKNESS.COM, along with lots of other kaiju coverage.)
