Lake Worth Zombie Alert

This is way funnier than the false incoming missile alert that got sent out in Hawaii; this latter wasn’t funny at all, especially, I would image, to the people living in Hawaii. Some of the citizens of Lake Worth, Florida might have been frightened, too, by the recent alert that was issued by persons unknown through a cellphone message during a power outage. It read: “Power outage and zombie alert for residents of Lake Worth and Terminus. There are now far less than seven thousand three hundred and eight customers involved due to extreme zombie activity. Restoration time uncertain.” It seems the alert itself was genuine—it concerned the power outage—but somebody hacked into the system and tinkered with it a little bit. The savvy geek would have immediately recognized it as a prank due to the reference to Terminus, the city in THE WALKING DEAD. I wonder, though, just how many residents took it seriously? Enough did, apparently, that the city responded to it by issuing a statement. Said public information officer Ben Kerr: “I want to reiterate that Lake Worth does not have any zombie activity currently and apologize for the system message.”

Genius. Someone is a frikkin’ genius.

Incidentally, though, Florida WAS the site of two recent real-life zombie attacks, one taking place in Florida in 2012 (the infamous Miami face-eating attack initially blamed on “bath salts” or synthetic marijuana, but later on an autopsy of the “zombie” revealed no trace of the drugs in his system) and another in 2016 in Ft. Lauderdale, in which the “zombie” also murdered and partially cannibalized a man who was a complete stranger to him. Maybe there IS something going on down in Florida. Maybe, as with the fake missile alert, the alert was something prepared “just in case” but issued by accident.
