Leave Slains Alone, Dammit!

It’s ripe for exploitation, then it’s protected, now it’s ripe for exploitation again, or could potentially be. What gives, here? Slains Castle in Scotland *might* have been the inspiration for Castle Dracula in Bram Stoker’s novel. We know that Stoker was in the area at the time he was writing DRACULA, and Slains LOOKS like Castle Dracula ought to look. Slains is currently—Wait, what day is this? What time of day?—Okay, as of this second, as I’m typing these words, Slains is a protected site, safe from being raped in the landscape-ry sense. But two minutes from now?

There are plans to refurbish the castle and turn it into a proper tourist site. Unfortunately there are some sonsabitches who want to turn it into condominiums, and these latter bastards just won’t give up. They’re filing injunctions in the courts to have Slains protected status overturned so they can then chop it up and sell it off. The back-and-forth legal wrangling has been going on for a decade and doesn’t look to be ceasing anytime soon. It almost makes you wish the castle had a curse on it, and that anybody who wanted to mutilate it for commercial gain would suffer the consequences. (Note that I said “almost.” This is important because there are those who take me to task on occasion for something that I write being unkind. This time, though, I really mean it. “Almost.”)
