Being the huge comic fan I am I have come across loads of vampire comics, but Ligeia the Vampire from ROK Comics is unlike any I have seen before. Why? Because it’s not your average printed comic, Ligeia is actually a comic app available for the iPhone. So instead of heading to your local comic shop and picking up a copy, you simply go to the App Store on you iPhone and buy it and view it right on your cell.
Ligeia the Vampire is a comic comprised of 40 episodes of vampire, zombie and wartime menace and inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s story of the same name. Drawn in a style similar to the work of Alex Toth, Frank Miller and Alberto Breccia, the strip pays homage to HP Lovecraft and movies like La Maschera del Demonio.
Created by artist Rodrigo Diaz Ricci and inspired by the work of the legendary Edgar Allan Poe, many of Ligeia the Vampire’s adventures are set in wartime Europe, a time when the lines between good and evil are never clear cut. A graphic designer and comic artist, Rodrigo has worked for US and European comics publishers, including covers for the Greek newspaper Eleftherotypia and also for Mondo Ignoto’s Horror and Forbidden Archaeology magazines.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for a new audience to get to know my characters,” said Rodrigo. “Mobile comics go beyond the comics fans out to the general public who would not, perhaps, buy comics.
“The iPhone is an amazing platform, he added, “It’s the natural evolution for the newspaper comic strips.”
While I agree that going digital is great for comics, I feel that webcomics do it better than an iPhone app, seeing how not everyone owns an iphone and most people do have internet. I personally follow a couple dozen webcomics online (I’m obsessed) but I have yet to check out a single comic app, seeing how I don’t own an iPhone. So, as much as I would love to read Ligeia the Vampire, I can’t, which really is a shame since it sounds absolutely fantastic. Maybe one day the comic will be available in other formats.
For those of you that do have an iPhone you can find Ligeia the Vampire HERE.
