First of all, I do have to take issue with the titling of this linked article, referring to such rarefied fare as “trash movies.” No, a much better word for them is “camp.” Trash is something that has no worth, that should be tossed into the nearest receptacle and incinerated, sans ceremony. Camp however is defined as “something so outrageously artificial, affected, inappropriate, or out-of-date as to be considered amusing; a style or mode of personal or creative expression that is absurdly exaggerated and often fuses elements of high and popular culture.” Camp is an Artform that should be celebrated. And those who do celebrate it tend to be smarter than the people around them. That’s not just me making a claim. There is now scientific evidence to prove it.
From the study: “We are dealing here with an audience with above-average education, which one could describe as ‘cultural omnivores’. Such viewers are interested in a broad spectrum of art and media across the traditional boundaries of high and popular culture.”
Cultural omnivores. I like it.
If you, then, think that PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE is one of the greatest movies ever made, to you I say, welcome, my fellow genius!
