Mahershala Ali is Blade!
To be brutally honest, I don’t know how I feel about this. I don’t particularly like Mahershala Ali in the role. He’s a fine actor, yes, but I don’t really see him as Blade. I’m also surprised they didn’t cast somebody younger. If they’re looking at more than one Blade film—and doubtless they are—you’d think they would have gone for someone a decade younger at least. Ali is 44. As someone who’s well into his forties myself, I don’t consider that “old” by any stretch. But there’s a lot of physicality involved in playing Blade. A LOT of physicality. And even if most of it is going to be performed by a stunt double, there are still certain requirements that will be made of Ali. I fear this may have been a misstep on the part of Marvel Studios, especially considering how strongly most people identify Wesley Snipes with the role. Ali also had already played a different character, the villain Cottonmouth, on the Netflix series LUKE CAGE. Then again, Chris Evans was in those godawful FANTASTIC FOUR movies before he got cast as Captain America, so previous appearances in Marvel projects (not that those movies really qualify) don’t really mean anything.
No release date has been given for the new Blade movie.
