In this funny TV commercial, a couple at a Sonic drive-thru enjoy the Ringleader burger, the woman stating that she enjoys its onions because they “keep vampires away”, causing her date who resembles a vampire to attempt to correct her while stating that she is thinking of garlic, and becoming hurt by her discouraging comments on vampires.
Remember this commercial? I first saw it a couple of years ago. Sonic tends to come up with some witty ads, I’ll give ‘em that. Usually it’s those two guys sitting in a car, just talking. You know the ones. My favorite of Sonic’s ads, though, remains this one, “Phil the Vampire.” Poor guy. Finds out he’s dating a closet anti-vampire bigot. They’re not always so easy to spot. They hide their ugly prejudices pretty well. This lady isn’t a very well educated vampire bigot, though, because she believes it is onions and not garlic that will keep a vampire at bay. I watch that commercial and I say, “Bite her, Phil! The bitch has it coming!” Hmm. If Phil HAD bitten her, would she have tasted like onions?
Here’s the thing, though. Onions actually were once believed to possess medicinal properties, and medicinal properties, in the long age of superstition, overlapped with “magical” ones. Eating garlic will make a person naturally repellant to bloodsucking mosquitoes, so maybe munching raw onions WILL make one less appetizing to vampires. ‘Course it’s also gonna make ‘em less appealing to everybody else, but you take the good with the bad, right?
