Move Over, Dragula

In case any of you didn’t know, “Dragula” is the drag strip automobile belonging to Grandpa Munster in THE MUNSTERS. (It was actually created by George Barris, who also created the Munster’s Munster Koach for the series, as well as creating the Batmobile for the BATMAN TV series, the General Lee for THE DUKES OF HAZZARD, K.I.T.T. from KNIGHT RIDER and the THE BEVERLY HILLBILIES jalopy.) “Dragula” is also a song by Rob Zombie, based on the racecar, and it lent its name to a drag queen contest. We are, however, concerned with the car. If you wish to hum the tune to the song as you read this article, you are free to do so.

In terms of coolness, Dragula has some competition from this six-wheeled “Monster Hearse,” the 1967 Cadillac Mortis. The Frankensteinian creation of mechanic Jimmy Driver of Idaho, the Cadillac Mortis was pieced together from parts of school buses, tractors, and the chassis of a 1967 Cadillac Superior funeral coach. It stands 10 feet tall and weighs 20,000 pounds. You can watch Mortis in action here. Chances are it has the edge in terms of horsepower, and certainly in terms of size, though Dragula is doubtless faster.
