Movie Review: HOUSEBOUND

Simple premise: A protagonist is placed under house arrest in a haunted house. Same basic plot as the 2008 Famke Janssen film 100 FEET. This surface similarity is only skin deep, though. These are two very different films. I was disappointed when I saw 100 FEET. HOUSEBOUND, on the other hand, is fabulous. It somehow manages to work both as a bitingly-funny parody and as a straight Horror movie. It’s also a nifty murder mystery. And it’s a New Zealand movie. This last really doesn’t have anything to do with anything, except that genre movies filmed in New Zealand by New Zealander crews tend, in my experience, to be really good. Think the instant classic WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS (which came out in 2014), the riveting, heartbreaking OUT OF THE BLUE, and the hilarious BLACK SHEEP as examples. The latter two both came out in 2006. (That last fact doesn’t really have anything to do with anything, either. Just thought I’d mention it.)

You will notice certain themes and situations in HOUSEBOUND that you have seen in other Horror movies. Don’t make the mistake of thinking HOUSEBOUND is derivative, though. And don’t try to figure out exactly what’s going on, either. Just hold on and enjoy the ride. Solid acting and a brilliant script bump this one up into SHAUN OF THE DEAD territory. Enjoy.
