Movie Review: OPEN GRAVE
A man awakens in a pit filled with dead bodies. He has no memory of who he is or how he got to be there. He gets out of the pit and finds his way to a nearby house, where he encounters other individuals who are likewise amnesiac. Annnnnd that’s all I really want to tell you about the plot. I don’t want to give anything away, as trying to figure this one out as you go is a great deal of its charm. Suffice it to say that you will be satisfied if you go into it hoping for a Horror movie. A mystery it is, and a psychological drama. But it’s also a Horror movie, and a well-crafted one at that. Mainstream critics hated it, but that shouldn’t come as any surprise. If anything, that it is loathed by the commoners should serve to make you *want* to watch it. Rejection from the commoners, unqualified as they are to appreciate genre efforts, is a badge of honor for such a movie as this.
The more than capable cast is led by Sharlto Copley, recognizable from such fare as the phenomenal DISTRICT 9 and MALEFICENT, and here doing his best Hugh Jackman from LOGAN impersonation. Give this one a shot.
WAYNE MILLER is the owner and creative director of EVIL CHEEZ PRODUCTIONS, specializing in theatrical performances and haunted attractions. He has written, produced, and directed (and occasionally acted in) over two dozen plays, most of them in the Horror and True Crime genres. He obtained a doctorate in Occult Studies from Miskatonic University and is an active paranormal investigator. Is frequently told he resembles Anton Lavey. And Ming the Merciless.
