Zombies are so played-out. That’s why, when there is something new done with them, it’s so refreshing. On that note, I am pleased to recommend newcomer David Freyne’s THE CURED. It tells the story of what would happen if there were a zombie apocalypse but then a cure for the condition was subsequently found and administered. How would the “regular” folks view and treat the ones who used to be zombies? And how would different types of people be affected by the time they spent as zombies, hunting down, killing, and eating their fellow humans? The cured zombies retain all their memories, and the regular folks who lived in fear of them for so long damn sure aren’t going to forget. It’s heady stuff, especially for a zombie movie. Concepts worthy of Romero.
The zombies in THE CURED are not actually dead, were not actually dead. They are zombies in the 28 DAYS LATER mold, still-living human beings turned into mindless, slavering, flesh-eaters by a virus. It wouldn’t be as easy to cure them if they’d been dead. The discrimination they faced would have been even more intense, I suspect, had they once been reanimated corpses. (They still would be reanimated corpses, wouldn’t they, even if “cured” of their bloodthirstiness? Would the “cure” stop decomposition? Would it restore life to a technically dead body?
This last would make for an interesting movie in its own right, don’t you think?
Can I suggest you try and track down the 2013 BBC series In the Flesh. Zombie outbreak of dead, all those who were part of the rising were all in grave and came back. A cure is found but there is resistance to the risen being reintegrated, a risen resistance movement and it is through the eyes of one risen in particular. It ran for two short seasons: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_the_Flesh_(TV_series)
Also from 2013 is the Returned with the infected given a “return protein” that staves off the effect of the zombie virus but they need an injection every 36 hours: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2093270/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_20
I think I remember THE RETURNED. IN THE FLESH sounds cool.
