Movie Review: US

For me, this movie was make-it-or-break-it for Jordan Peele. It was his proving ground. As good as GET OUT was, it got its deserved respect from the mainstream because of the politics of Hollywood. I wanted to see what Peele did next. His next movie would prove whether or not he was for real or whether he just got lucky, whether he was a major new voice or just a one-trick pony.

I am delighted to announce, friends, that Jordan Peele is legit. US is an even better movie than GET OUT. And whereas some would and did try to argue that the latter was more of a “psychological thriller” than a fright flick, US is balls-out Horror, and Peele has been quick to set people straight on that matter. It is Horror, and a shining example of just how good a Horror movie can be. It deserves an Oscar nomination even more than GET OUT. Will it get it? I doubt it. But it should. (Likewise Lupita Nyong’o deserves a nomination for her performance. She is simply fabulous here.)

US is ferociously original and laced throughout with subtle but biting humor. It’s also creepy A-F. BY all means, check this one out in the theater. If there’s any justice, this one will be getting a lot of talk this time next year, when the 2019 Oscars come ‘round.
