Movie Review: WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS
This one has been sitting in my queue for sometime. I’d just never gotten around to watching it. There just aren’t enough hours in the day, y’know? So many books to read, so many movies to see. After watching THOR: RAGNAROK in the theater, I wanted to make a special point of checking out Director Taika Waititi’s earlier genre work. There was this show, FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS, that friends have praised and suggested to me, but while it may be funny, it isn’t exactly genre material, so I haven’t seen it. (Not enough hours, remember.) But WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS? That’s right up my alley. About as far from something like THOR as you can get, but my tastes are way versatile. As long as it falls within the geek genre.
ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE. BYZANTIUM. A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT. These are the three best modern vampire movies. (“Modern” here means anything post BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA in 1992.) They are the creme de la creme. They are the truly great offerings. To this august threesome, I will now add WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS. It is brilliant. Genius. And considering that I tend to view comedies as being generally less substantial than dramas–I dig on gravitas–that makes it even more of a thing that I’d rate this movie so highly. If, like me, you just haven’t gotten around to watching this one yet, do as I did. Make it a point to watch it. You deserve a treat.
