Mumm-Ra’s the Word

It stands to reason that, on my list of most beloved cartoon series, the two that rank nearest the top of the list are HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE and THUNDERCATS. (They occupy the pinnacle, jockeying for position with the Filmation TARZAN cartoon series and THUNDARR THE BARBARIAN; these even top SCOOBY-DOO WHERE ARE YOU?, SUPER FRIENDS, G.I. JOE, VOLTRON, and TRANSFORMERS, all occupying the next tier.) Both are set in Fantasy worlds and both have supernatural, i.e. Horror-esque, undertones. And look at the starring villains! He-Man has Skeletor, a muscular blue dude with a skull for a face. And the Thundercats have Mumm-Ra, a desiccated but still living mummy who would, pert-near every episode, transform himself into an equally scary big muscular blue monster. In other words, of course I was gonna love me some Mumm-Ra! (His name, by the way, comes from the Hebrew words “mummia raa”, or “bad mummy”.)

In the 2011 revamp series of THUNDERCATS it is revealed that Mumm-Ra is vulnerable, like many undead things, to bright sunlight. Ironic, then, that this new action figure from Super7 glows in the dark after brief exposure to bright light. Dang, the figure is nice, but it’s pricey. But I needs it! Needs it!
