A brand new vampire show is on the way! Woo! Famed film writer and creator J. Michael Straczynski (Thor, Underworld: Awakening) has partnered with producer Roy Lee (How to Train Your Dragon, The Ring) for Vlad Dracula, an original series in development for Starz. Starz is best known for their hit show Spartacus, a series that is packed full of violence, nudity and history. If the upcoming Vlad Dracula is anything like it then we’re in for a treat.
Produced by Hollywood veteran Rob Tapert (30 Days of Night, Xena), the drama is described as a unique spin on the classic story, blending elements of the historical 15th-century prince with the fictional vampire, tracing his rise and fall “as he struggles desperately to hang on to his humanity, his wife and his kingdom.”
Sadly that is all that has been revealed on this project so far, which is a shame because I am dying to know more! With a network likes Starz behind Vlad Dracula (which is like HBO in the sense that you have to pay and they don’t have to follow the rules of cable) it means that they can go all out on the show. They don’t have to lighten it up for cable – it can be as dark and gritty as they want. That’s a big bonus for me, knowing that we may get a very badass vampire show soon.
Another big bonus is the team behind Vlad Dracula, there are some seriously big Hollywood names attached to this project. Hopefully all of their awesomeness will combine and create one spectacular vampire show.
Obviously I am super excited about Vlad Dracula. New vampire shows always make me happy, and a dark historical series makes me even happier.
What are your thoughts on Vlad Dracula? Are you looking forward to a show like this?
