Nike and Zombies and Female Empowerment

I support women’s’ rights. Figure I just ought to say that. I support equality. We clear on that? I hope so.

That being said, I wrote last week about the Nike shoe commercial that featured an 80s-style slasher chasing a woman who easily outpaces him. Some people found this commercial objectionable for its depiction of women. That’s stupid. It was a joke, it was poking fun at the old Horror cliché, and the woman came out the clear winner. The objections—sorry not sorry—were stupid. If anything, the ad was a case of female empowerment.

Moving on. Nike also created an ad in the same vein, involving a woman being chased by a zombie. I don’t know if anybody complained about that one. If they did, it’s absurd. If they didn’t, it’s even more absurd. Why object to a lady being chased by, and outrunning, a slasher if you’re not going to object to a woman being chased by and outrunning a zombie? Are zombies more politically correct, for some reason? I mean, it’s a male zombie. Is there really that much of a difference between an undead slasher and a zombie? Sometimes, as with Zombie Jason from the FRIDAY THE 13TH franchise, the two are one and the same.
