No More Ash? I Wouldn’t Bet On It.

It could be that Bruce Campbell is simply tired of playing Ash Williams, his most famous personification, the beloved hero of the EVIL DEAD franchise. He has announced, with the news that Starz has cancelled his series ASH VS. THE EVIL DEAD, that he is officially retired as Ash. I would never intend to call Bruce a liar, but I also suspect we will see him come OUT of retirement at least one more time, although it may be awhile before that happens. As with TWIN PEAKS and Agent Dale Cooper, I can’t help but believe there is one more ride, a “curtain call”, for the character and for the franchise. Let us remember that the EVIL DEAD remake was a big hit, and that it perfectly set up an alternate timeline–“parallel time,” to put it in DARK SHADOWS terminology–for the franchise, along with a new leading lady. And then there were those rumors that the plan was to unite the two timelines at some point in the future, with Mia, the heroine of the new film, encountering and teaming-up with Ash. One could argue that those plans were changed when the decision was made to make ASH VS. THE EVIL DEAD into a television show. Still, the idea is like a genie out of the bottle. There ain’t no putting it back in now.

Imagine a grizzled, senior-citizen Ash having to pick up his chainsaw and boomstick one last time, a sort of THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS scenario. It would be a guaranteed success. I expect we’ll see it, and hopefully sooner rather than later.
