NOS4A2 is Cancelled

The official word just came in. NOS4A2 has been cancelled. I am anything but surprised. I would have been surprised if AMC *hadn’t* pulled the plug. For whatever reasons, the ratings for season two were roughly half of what they were for season one. I don’t know why. Season two was the stronger, better season. Where did those extra viewers go? Why didn’t they come back for season two? Did they “feel” like the story was finished? Whatever the case, the way it ended was satisfying. The storylines were wrapped up nicely, with just enough left open. And unlike with network television (or any series by John Logan), where shows can get cancelled in the middle, leaving viewers hanging, lacking “closure”, we got to see the complete story with NOS4A2. I’m not too sad about it, all things considered. And really, the story was done. A third season would have required a major transition in focus.

All that being said, have we really seen the end of NOS4A2? Don’t bet on it. Even if we don’t see anything new on AMC–I still wouldn’t rule out the possibility of that spin-off series–we can be pretty certain that Joe Hill will be writing the further adventures of Maggie at some point. He’s said as much.
