Online Carmilla Event

From September 12 until October 12–one entire month–a rare film version of “Carmilla” will be available online as part of a promotion for a book, “The Annotated Carmilla.”

Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s classic novella, which pretty much created the Lesbian Vampire trope, has been adapted half a dozen times for the screen since its publication in 1872 (a full quarter century prior to Bram Stoker’s more-famous work about the undead).  The most famous of these would probably be “The Vampire Lovers” from Hammer Studios and “Blood And Roses,” directed by Roger Vadim.  A more obscure version, produced by Polish television in the 1980s, can be seen during the Virtual Blog Tour of a new book about Le Fanu’s story.

“The Annotated Carmilla” contains over four hundred footnotes, explaining not only the countless little details those in the modern age might find puzzling (What are ‘traces’ when it comes to horse-drawn carriages?  What does Laura mean when she calls the male servants ‘Myrmidons’?) but also an analysis of timelines which nail down a period for the story as well as offering clues as to events.  Now a series of blogs will review the book, interview the author, discuss the book itself, over the course of four weeks.

Along with those will be a special online showing of the 1980s version from Poland, a remarkably faithful telling in black and white, and one next-to-impossible to find.  It will be available only for the length of the tour–at the Facebook Page devoted to the tour as well as some of the blogs taking part.  After October 12, the video file will be deleted from YouTube.  Which means this may be the only chance for many fans of “Carmilla” to see it!

Starting Monday, September 12 the following blogs and websites will begin the blog tour, and several will host the Polish film (roughly an hour in length).  Keep in mind not every single blog will post at the same time.  The Facebook page is an excellent place to check on progress…
