Director Matt Reeves shared the first look at the new Batmobile from the upcoming film THE BATMAN to his Twitter account. There isn’t a lot of detail, just enough to titillate, really. What do you think of it? It has sort of a MAD MAX look to it. More built for speed than the “Tumbler” Batmobile from Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. I dig it. It doesn’t look silly like the car from that godawful BATMAN AND ROBIN fiasco, and it’s more distinct than the one used by Ben Affleck’s Batman. I daresay this Batmobile looks the most like an actual car than any Batmobile since the one from the 1960s TV series. My favorite Batmobile remains the one from the 1989 movie starring Michael Keaton. But I could learn to love this new one, too.
Now check out the photo taken from the side. Notice that Batman’s suit seems to have a collar on it? This is a departure for Batman outfits, but it would be completely in keeping with the crime noir theme that Reeves has stated he wants for this new offering. A combination of a steampunk and noir aesthetic would be quite lovely for a Batman flick. To quote Sophia Petrillo from THE GOLDEN GIRLS: Picture it: Steam rising from gritty streets, streetlights doing battle with thick fog. You almost expect to hear the slow wail of a saxophone. Then the night is ripped apart by this speeding metallic beast, seemingly belonging to another world, an escapee from some dark, dystopian future.
Yes, I think I like it a lot.
