George Romero’s seminal DAWN OF THE DEAD was filmed forty years ago (!) at the Monroeville, Pennsylvania mall, near Pittsburg. The movie was shot at night, after the mall had closed, and the filmmakers had to work around the mall’s schedule, rather than vice versa. (They had to halt production during the Christmas season due to all the holiday decorations, for example.) The mall used to house a museum celebrating the film and zombies in general.
This year, from June 8th-10th, the LIVING DEAD WEEKENDS fan convention will be held at the Monroeville Mall. Here’s the blurb: “[It is a] fan convention like no other, celebrating the works of George A. Romero during the anniversary year of DAWN OF THE DEAD. Featuring a reunion of both the place the movie takes place and all of the people who made it, from the lead actors to your favorite screen zombies, to the people behind the scenes that made it all happen. Featuring exhibits and guests from your favorite horror movies. It’s all here in the form of a huge fan gathering and convention.”
Despite some questionable phraseology, that sure sounds like fun for any self-respecting zombie mark.
