Review of Bloodrayne: Twin Blades

Thanks to the awesome Comic app on the Kindle Fire I am discovering SO many fangtastic comics that I never even knew existed – like a whole series of BloodRayne comics! Yay! Now, I did know there were a few BloodRayne comics released years ago after the video games, but I had no idea there were SO many. The best part is that each issue is a stand-alone one-shot story, so you don’t have to read in order and you don’t have to read a massively massive story arc. Out of the many Rayne stories to choose from, I of course went with Bloodrayne: Twin Blades because it tells the tale of how Rayne gets her badass weapons.

Twin Blades reveals a tale of Rayne’s young life when she meets up with Declan Finney – a Dhampir who claims to have been cured by the Brimstone Society and is now human. Can anyone really shed their Dhampir skin? Rayne hopes so…by the end of this tale, fans will know one thing for certain — the origin of Rayne’s spectacular blades.

Here’s the breakdown:

Artwork: 4 out of 5
The artwork was pretty good, there were a few panels here and there that could have used a bit more work to make them look cleaner and sharper, but other than that I found the comic as a whole visually appealing. I would have liked it more had Rayne looked a little more like Rayne, rather than just a chick with short red hair. I did however love the colors, seeing vibrant colors in such a dark tale was a treat. The facial expressions were also fantastic, the artist captured every emotion, and even Rayne’s attitude, perfectly.

Story: 2.5 out of 5
It was short, so very short. I knew that it was going to be a mini story, but I had no idea that it would be that short. Honestly, there isn’t much going on in the comic at all. We learn how Rayne gets her blades… and that’s it. The way she gets her twin blades isn’t even all that fascinating, so it doesn’t even have that going for it. It was definitely a disappointment.

Overall, I wasn’t too happy with Bloodrayne: Twin Blades. The only people I would recommend checking this comic out are the hardcore BloodRayne fans. For anyone else it would be a waste of time and money. Here’s hoping the other Bloodrayne comics are better.
