Review of I, Vampire Issue #1

Ever since I heard about DC’s massive 52-comic reboot I was uber geeked, especially since one of the many comics they were bringing back was the vamptastic classic I, Vampire. The first issue of the new I, Vampire was released months and months ago but due to a serious lack of comic shops in my area (curse you comic gods!) I just now got my hands on it. Finally!

In I, Vampire, vampire Andrew Stanton kept mankind safe from the horrors of the supernatural world for hundreds of years, thanks to a truce he made with his ex-lover Mary, the Queen of the Damned. But now the truce has reached a bloody end and Andrew must do everything in his power to stop Mary and her dark forces from going on a killing spree – and she plans to start with the heroes of the DC Universe!

Written by Joshua Hale Fialkov
Art by Andrea Sorrentino
Cover by Jenny Frison

Here’s the break down:

Artwork: 5 out of 5
Both the cover by Frison and the comic’s art by Sorrentino is phenomenal. Frison’s cover is absolutely stunning and eye-catching, she has done work for many amazing comics and she impresses me each and every time with her unique and powerful style. I feel the same way about Sorrentino, also impressive, his dark artwork captures the tone of I, Vampire flawlessly. Every page of this comic is a fantastic sight to behold. DC did very well when choosing the artists for I, Vampire. I’m in love.

Story: 4 out of 5
Like virtually every first issue of every comic, I, Vampire #1 is mostly an introduction of what’s to come. The back and forth from the past and present was a bit confusing at first, but you get used to it fairly quickly. We meet Andrew, his ex-lover Mary, the Queen of the Damned, and Mary’s terrifying vampire army. We also see the very beginning of the vampire’s war against humankind. The story is wonderfully dark and horrifying, with just a dash of morbid humor. Fialkov’s writing is strong and even beautiful at times, and reveals just enough to keep you interested and wanting more.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the first issue of I, Vampire and look forward to getting my hands on the next issue. After reading the first issue I have high hopes for this comic. Definitely a comic I recommend for vampire fans looking for something darker.

Currently there are six issues of I, Vampire available, with the seventh being released March 28.

Have any of you read I, Vampire #1, if so, what did you think?
