Review of ‘Paranormalcy’ by Kiersten White

Paranormalcy by Kiersten White is a young adult novel that has had people singing its praises for quite a while now and at long last I have finally read it and I can join the masses of happy readers.

Paranormalcy tells the tale of Evie, a teenager who always thought of herself as normal, even though she works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, her ex-boyfriend is an evil faerie, she’s falling for a shapeshifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals’ glamours. Things really take a turn for the weird, and terrifying, when Evie discovers she may be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

After reading the plot description on Paranormalcy I figured it was yet another simple young adult novel, but while reading the book I was surprised by how complex and well written it is. The story was wonderfully mysterious, action-packed and full of twists and turns, I found myself racing through every page in order to find out the ending (I admit, I almost cheated and skipped to the last page). It was more than a great overall story though, the dialogue was fantastic and often hilarious, and honestly, reminded me a little bit of Buffy at times (yay!). The character development was also excellent, which is something many young adult authors have a difficult time with. It was a wonderfully clever and unique read, I loved the universe the author created.

As you can see there are many great things about this book, but I have to say my favorite is that it’s believable. Yes, it’s about magical creatures, but in spite of that it was surprisingly realistic. The author captured teenagers perfectly, the characters felt like real teens, not teens created by an adult. Even the romance in the book was realistic (and adorable), it wasn’t forced or rushed, it was like a real (magical) love story.

Honestly, while I enjoyed this book, I think I would have liked it even more if I were a teenager. This is most definitely a book teens can relate to and fall in love with. Evie reminded me a lot of my teen years.

Now, I know there is no mention of vampires above and this is a vampire site, but I assure you, there are vampires in Paranormalcy. While the main characters are not vampires, there are many vamps throughout the book.

Overall, Paranormalcy is a clever and captivating story full of action, mystery, magical beasties and a touch of romance. I loved it! If it’s any indication as to how much I enjoyed this book, the second I finished Paranormalcy I went right onto Amazon and bought the second book in the series, Supernaturally, for my Kindle. Can’t wait to get started on the second book, here’s hoping it’s as good as the first.
