Review, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse

Things are coming to a head between the Cullens and Victoria; the revenge mad vampire who wants nothing more than to kill Bella. As usual Edward tries his best to keep the truth of the dangers that await Bella from her, only Bella hates being kept out of the loop. Jacob is of course more than happy to fill in the blanks, much to Edward’s chagrin.

Things are also getting serious between Bella and Edward. Edward wants Bella to marry him but thanks to her parents divorce Bella is still gun shy about the whole idea. Bella however still intends to become a vampire after graduation. When Bella lets slip to Jacob her plans to become a vampire, Jacob is outraged. So much so that he tells Bella he would rather see her dead for real than become a monster.

When the scent of an unknown vampire is detected in Bella’s home, Edward and Jacob agree to a reluctant truce in order to protect the girl they both love. It’s agreed that Bella stay at the reservation with Jacob and the pack while the Cullens try to track their mysterious intruder, a boy named Riley who unknown to the Cullens had been sired by Victoria in her plot to kill Bella as revenge for Edward killing her lover James.

While Bella joins the Quileute tribe during a fireside meeting, Jacob’s father Billy Black tells the tale of the tribes first encounter with a ‘cold one‘ (a cameo by the one and only Peter Murphy) and of the tribes ability to turn into wolves in order to protect themselves. He also tells the tale of the cold one’s mate and of her search for revenge and how the chief’s third wife sacrificed her life by stabbing herself in order to distract the cold woman with her fresh blood long enough for the tribe to kill her.

Meanwhile, a drastic increase in disappearances and murders plaguing nearby Seattle raises suspicions of vampire involvement and Jasper suspects that someone is building a vampire army. A vision from Alice confirms that the newborn vampires are on their way to Forks although she and the others are still unsure of who is responsible. Is it the revenge hungry Victoria? Have the Volturi come to make sure that Bella has been turned as Alice had promised? A truce between the Cullens and the Quileute wolf pack is made but will it be enough to protect Bella and put and end to the newborn vampire threat once and for all or has Bella’s fate already been sealed?

The third instalment of the Twilight Saga, Eclipse finally delivers the anticipated confrontation between the Cullens, the Quileute wolf pack and Victoria, who up until now seemed little more than an afterthought rather than the main villain of the series. The Volturi also make an appearance though their screen time is limited. It is however nice to see Jasper’s character receive some much needed development, it seemed like he never said more than two words during either Twilight or New Moon.

The love triangle between Bella, Edward and Jacob continues with Edward ever the control freak and Jacob the love sick puppy (pardon the pun). Edward and Jacob do manage to make some kind of peace between each other while hiding Bella away on a mountain in order to keep the newborns from being able to track her sent, but it is short lived. Bella has made her choice and plans to marry Edward and become a vampire but Jacob is determined to prove that he is the one she belongs with.

Of the three movies to date Eclipse has delivered the most action so far. The climactic final battle pairing The Cullens and the Quileute wolf pack against Victoria and the newborn army provided a satisfactory amount of violence and managed to keep my interest, I suspect much of that was due to David Slade taking over directorial duties. Slade has had previous experience with vampires having directed the graphic novel inspired, vampire killfest 30 Days of Night.

  1. i also saw the movie and i agree it was time that Jasper’s character become more evolved, in Twilight and New Moon he was basically always beside Alice looking crazy(thats how i think he looks anyways) and the fight scene was the only part i thought would be any good but i was wrong. there were alot of good scenes but they did leave out alot. this movie was also better produced then the first too and i hope they keep this director for Breaking Dawn. my advice watch this one and forget the other two.
